Check How Much You Have to Move

As you prepare to move files from a school account to a personal account, you need to be aware of available space. With our school accounts, we have unlimited space. Unfortunately, with a personal account there is a limit of 10 gb of storage space (although you can buy additional space for a monthly fee). To avoid issues or to help you decide what you can copy to your personal drive, you need to take a quick look at how much you are moving and how much space you have in the new location

Sign Up for Personal Google Account

If you do not have a personal google account, you need to set one up Links to an external site. first.  It is a very simple process and it is free.

Google Takeout

Google Takeout Links to an external site.will allow you to transfer your email and drive files to a personal Google account.

  1. Process may fail if you are signed in to multiple GMail accounts.  To be sure, sign out of ALL GMail accounts, then sign back in to your school Google account ONLY.
  2. Go to Google Takeout Links to an external site.. 
  3. Enter your personal gmail address and click send code.

  1. In another tab, open your personal email account and access the email from Google.
  2. Copy the code provided in the message. 
  3. Navigate back to the Google Takeout webpage and paste in the code.

  1. Select the content you want copied.
  2. Click the blue Start Transfer button.

Important Things to Note

  • Only emails and documents that you own will transfer. Anything that is shared with you will not.
  • The original files stay in your school account. Any changes you make to the copied files don't affect the originals.
  • A file in My Drive won't be copied if either of the following are true.
    • You're a viewer, not an editor or owner.
    • The owner has turned off download, print, and copy options for commenters and viewer.
