THE WHY

Email proficiency is mandated for all staff members. You will be expected to check your email frequently throughout the day. With practice, you will find that email is a great way to collaborate with your peers, communicate with students, and update parents.

Gmail can be used by teachers and students in grades 3-12 to communicate and collaborate. It can be used to add authenticity to learning by allowing students to connect with mentors and advisors outside of the classroom. It provide the opportunity to provide instruction in digital citizenship: cyberbullying, privacy and security.

1. Instructors and students (as age appropriate) can use Gmail effectively.

Classroom Application

1. Teachers can use Gmail to easily communicate with student, parents, coworkers, etc. 
2. Students can use Gmail to easily communicate with their teachers, other students, people outside of school.
3. Gmail can be connected to other apps to provide notifications about feedback, comments on documents, new or graded assignments, shared documents, calendar invites, etc.

Using Gmail in Canvas and Google Classroom

• In Canvas, school Gmail accounts are connected to Canvas' Inbox and Notifications for both teachers and student. Users can edit their notifications and control what they receive, frequency, and how they receive it (email or text). Any messages sent from within Canvas appear in the users' school Gmail, but can also be accessed in Canvas.
• Students and teachers will receive notifications from Google Classroom in their Gmail. These notifications can be controlled under Settings.

1. 1. Design a lesson in which you apply what you have learned for use in your classroom, either by using Gmail yourself for instruction, or by having your students use it. See the Designing Tech Amplified Lesson for guidance on creating a lesson plan that uses digital tools.

      • Did students demonstrate understanding of the learning target? If yes, how? 
      • How did the use of Gmail amplify your lesson? Did it add value to the learning goal though engagement, enhancement or extension? Did it make you or your student more efficient and effective?
      • If you had the opportunity to teach this lesson again to this same group of students, what would you do differently? Why?
      • In your reply, you can choose to share an artifact or your lesson plan in the form of a shared link, screenshot (Links to an external site.), attached file (Links to an external site.), or embedded image (Links to an external site.). This is not required.
