THE WHY

In order to meet the needs of their students, teachers need to be prepared to support students with dyslexia and related disorders.

The National Institutes of Health reports that estimates vary, but approximately 10% of school-age population has a language-based learning disability, which includes dyslexia. Dyslexia is the most prevalent and well-recognized subtype of learning disability. Approximately 80% of students with specific learning disabilities receiving special education services have deficits in reading. The prevalence estimates for dyslexia range from 6% to 17% of the school-age population, depending on the criteria used to identify the difficulty.

Statute requires each public school shall conduct dyslexia screenings. “Dyslexia screening” consists of universal and secondary screeners. Assessments and screeners can be completed by classroom teachers, reading interventionists, Title 1teachers, reading specialists or coaches or any combination therein.
