Pick up Your New Tower
If you are on the list, check with your building's office for where the new towers are located in your building. The towers are labeled on the back with the same name you see on the list. You can pick your tower up at your convenience, and you can take a reasonable amount of time to work on copying files that you need.
Move any Files Stored on the Tower
In most cases, the only files you need to back up would be files you have saved on your desktop. You can use your H: drive, a flash drive, or Google Docs/Drive as a temporary backup location for your files as you move them from one computer to another. Your school Google Drive has unlimited storage, and can store ANY kind of file, not just Google Docs files.
Before copying files from My Documents, My Pictures, My Music, or My Videos folders, look in your H: drive and see if those files already exist in that location. Many of our Windows 7 computers use your H: drive automatically as a storage location for those folders, so in that case you will NOT need to back those up.
If you prefer to have assistance backing up and restoring your files, go ahead and collect your new station, then submit a work order requesting assistance.
Turning in Your Old Tower
Once you are satisfied that your new station is complete and you are done with the old one, you can return the old one to the same location where you picked up the new one, and the Tech Dept will come by to collect them at a later time. Keep in mind that nothing permanent is going to happen to your old tower for several weeks after we collect it. If you forget something, you can let us know and we can help you find it back.
Please don't ask if you can keep your old station in your room as a "student" station or similar setup. We have a replacement cycle process in place to limit the amount of maintenance required to keep older stations in optimum condition. The stations that are collected will be used for spare parts, in some cases passed down to users or locations that are not part of the replacement cycle, sometimes they are donated or sold to other districts that have a hard time affording new equipment, or they are recycled. If we leave them in place, over time the inventory snowballs to the point where we don't have enough staff or resources to maintain all the devices.
Windows 10 Tutorials
The new computer will include the Windows 10 operating system. We have some information and tutorials for learning the differences between it and Windows 7, as well as some personalization and "getting started"-type documents.
Installing Copy Machines/Printers
The new computer will NOT have your building copy machines included as printers. They are very easy to install and configure just follow the steps for Windows 10, choosing the appropriate guide for your building.
