Where's the power button?

The power button is #1 in the diagram above. Some other frequently used buttons include the volume controls (#2 and #3) and the Windows button (#4) used to open the Start menu or to wake up the computer from sleep mode. 

How do I use this touch screen?

The display panel can accept inputs like a tablet, using the multi-touch screen, or like a traditional notebook computer, using the keyboard and touchpad. You can touch the screen with one or more fingertips to perform a variety of tasks.

tap.png Tap: Tap once on an item. Similar to left-clicking with a mouse.
pressandhold.png Press and Hold: Press your finger down and leave it there for a moment.  Similar to right-clicking with a mouse.
zoom.png Zoom: Move two fingers together or apart while touching the screen.
rotate.png Rotate: Put two or more fingers on an item and then rotate your fingers clockwise or counterclockwise. Not all items can be rotated, depending upon the app.
slide.png Slide: Drag your finger across the screen. Similar to pressing and holding to pan and to scrolling with a mouse.
swipe.png Swipe: Start from left/right edge of the screen, then swipe inwards toward the center. Swiping in from the left edge of the screen can open the task view. Swiping in from the right edge of the screen displays the action center.

 

How do I use the touch pad?

The touchpad functions as a conventional mouse. To move the pointer on the screen, slide your fingertip over the pad in the direction in which you want the pointer to move. Put two fingers on the trackpad and move them in a vertical or horizontal direction to scroll. To click, you can tap anywhere with one finger for a left click or tap anywhere with two fingers for a right click. You can also press in the appropriate zone as pictured below.

You can also zoom in or out by placing two fingers on the trackpad and moving them closer together or further apart. Swiping up with three fingers will display the task view with all your open windows. Swiping down with three fingers will show the desktop.

 

What is the red button in the middle of the keyboard? 

The TrackPoint pointing device enables you to perform all the functions of a traditional mouse, such as pointing, clicking, and scrolling.

Note: Place your hands in the typing position and use your index finger or middle finger to apply pressure to the pointing-stick nonslip cap. Use either thumb to press the left-click button or right-click button. 

  • Point: Use the pointing stick (#1) to move the pointer on the screen. To use the pointing stick, apply pressure to the pointing-stick nonslip cap in any direction parallel to the keyboard. The pointer moves accordingly but the pointing stick itself does not move. The speed at which the pointer moves depends on the amount of pressure you apply to the pointing stick. 
  • Left-click: Press the left-click button (#2) to select or open an item.
  • Right-click: Press the right-click button (#3) to display a shortcut menu.
  • Scroll: Press and hold the dotted scroll bar (#4) while applying pressure to the pointing stick in the vertical or horizontal direction. Then you can scroll through the document, Web site, or apps.

 

Where's the pen/stylus and how do I use it with the touch screen?

The pen/stylus is stored in the bottom of the computer (#3 in the diagram above.) To remove it from its slot, use your finger to slide the end of the pen out from underneath. To charge the pen, insert it into the slot with the red line on bottom, until it snaps. The pen will fully charge in about five minutes. You can check the status of the pen's battery by using the ThinkPad Pen Low Battery Notifier app (look in the All Apps). Keep the pen perpendicular to the display to achieve the best line quality.

  • To click, tap the display once with the pen. 
  • To double click, quickly tap twice.
  • To right click, tap the tip (#1) on the display and hold for one second, or press and hold the click button (#3).
  • To hover the cursor without clicking, hold the stylus close to the display without touching it.
  • To erase ink, press and hold the eraser button (#2) and then tap the tip on the display. Then drag the pen across what you want to erase.  

MS Office

When using Word, Excel or PowerPoint, access the Pens tab to highlight, draw, and write on a document (no text recognition). The options will vary slightly depending which app you are using. For example, there's an Ink to Math option for writing equations and inserting them as text into a Word document.

How do I access the on-screen keyboard?

When in laptop mode, you can display an on-screen keyboard by clicking the keyboard button in the tray.

When NOT in laptop mode, the on-screen keyboard will automatically display when you place the cursor in a text field. If this does not happen, go to Settings>Devices>Typing and look for the Touch Keyboard section. Turn on the setting to automatically show the touch keyboard when no keyboard is attached.

To display the keyboard button in all display modes, tap and hold at the bottom of the desktop display, and when the menu appears tap "Show touch keyboard button."

Keyboard layouts

  • Standard: default, pictured above
  • Split Screen: great for thumb typists or those that grip a tablet with a hand on either side. 
  • Full-size: mimics the standard hardware keyboard
  • Pen: allows you to use the stylus or your finger, to write and have it automatically turn into text.

To choose one of the layouts, with the onscreen keyboard displayed, tap the small keyboard icon in the bottom right corner near the arrows. On the blue menu that appears, tap the button for the layout you desire.

You can also choose to display the keyboard across the entire bottom of the screen, or shrink it and reposition it on the screen. Tap the button indicated below to shrink the big display. Tap and hold the top black bar and drag the keyboard to reposition it.

Lenovo WRITEit is a free app Links to an external site. for use with touch and pen-enabled devices that you can choose to install (F Drive>Lab Folder>WriteIt Folder). It allows you to place a writeable canvas over any application, document or screen and easily save or share annotations. WRITEit also allows you to write in almost any text field where you would type. WRITEit gives you the ability to make notes, draw or write anywhere on any screen or document. You can markup photos, web pages, videos, pdfs and more, then snip, save as an image, and share. For converting handwriting to text, WRITEit recognizes your writing, offers suggestions for words, and inserts your writing as text or an image.

Recommended Settings

  • When Installing, choose NOT to have it start automatically.
  • Pin Writeit to Your Taskbar for easy access.
  • Access the Settings and choose:
    • General>Enable Touch Mode 9works with finger or pen)

      • Handwriting: Enable
        • Auto-Convert Ink to Text: On
        • Set Auto-Convert Time Dely
    • Canvas>Choose to automatically save and where

How can I control the keyboard backlight?

Fn + Space bar: Adjusts the keyboard backlight (off-dim-bright-off).

What options do I have for positioning the display panel?

Do not open the display with too much force, otherwise the panel or hinges may be damaged. The display panel can be opened to any angle up to 360 degrees.

Laptop: Suitable for tasks that require a keyboard and mouse (such as creating documents, writing e-mails, and so on).

Stand: Suitable for tasks that require little or no touch (such as viewing photos or playing videos). The keyboard and touchpad are automatically locked when the screen is opened beyond 190 degrees (approximately).

Tablet: Suitable for tasks that require touching the screen often (such as surfing the Web, playing games, and so on).

Tent: Suitable for tasks that require limited interaction with the touch screen (such as displaying graphs or PowerPoint presentations).

What is tablet mode?

When you use the stand, tablet or tent display the device may switch to tablet mode Links to an external site.. Tablet mode makes the your device more touch-friendly. The desktop is no longer shown and the starting point for all your activities is the Start screen. By default, the Start screen displays the tiles that you pinned to it. You can control if your device does this automatically or not at all, by going to Settings>System>Tablet mode.

How do I put the laptop to sleep?

If you will be away from your computer for only a short time, put the computer to sleep. When the computer is in sleep mode, you can quickly wake it to resume use, bypassing the startup process.

To put the computer to sleep, do one of the following: 

  • Open the start menu, and then select Power, then Sleep
  • Keyboard shortcut: Windows Key+X, then U, then S.

Wait until the power indicator light starts blinking (indicating that the computer is in sleep mode) before you move your computer. Moving your computer while the hard disk is spinning can damage the hard disk, causing loss of data.

To wake the computer, do one of the following: 

  • Press the Power button.
  • Tap the Windows button on the display
